How much it costs.
A full cost table for free records, GRO certificates, the big UK subscriptions and Claude, plus three worked monthly budgets.
You can start this hobby for nothing. You can also spend fifty pounds a month on it without noticing. Most people land somewhere between the two, and the right point depends on the question you are asking, not on a fixed monthly bill.
This guide lists every real cost in one place, then works through three sample budgets. Nothing here is a subscription you must keep. Every price below can change; check the linked page before you pay.

The two subscription rows carry more uncertainty than the rest of this table. Both providers change their tier names and prices often. This guide could not load their pricing pages directly today, so the figures above come from independent price-comparison articles, not the providers’ own pages. Check the current price on ancestry.co.uk or findmypast.co.uk before you pay anything.
Three ways to run this.
Nothing at all.
Work the free-records route only. Search FreeBMD, FreeCEN and FreeREG, use the free GRO index, and try FamilySearch. Use Claude’s free tier to organise your notes and check your reasoning. This buys a real, working research method. It will not reach every record, and some questions will stay open until you pay for one certificate or book a library slot.
About £5 a month.
Keep the free tier for Claude. Add one GRO certificate roughly every two or three months, chosen because it answers a specific question, not because a box in your tree is empty. Averaged over a few months, that is close to £5 a month. This buys targeted evidence for the questions the free indexes cannot settle, without an open-ended subscription.
About £25 a month.
Add Claude Pro (about £15 a month) and one entry-level subscription, such as Findmypast’s cheapest UK tier (from about £9.99 a month). This buys a proper research sprint: longer AI sessions, full search across a paid provider’s records, and no waiting for library access. Run it for a month or two around a specific goal, such as clearing a generation, then decide whether to keep it.
Treat a subscription as a tool, not a bill.
None of these providers need a permanent place in your monthly outgoings. A subscription earns its keep for the weeks you are actively searching a paid collection. Cancel it once that phase ends; your downloaded certificates, your notes and your Claude conversations do not disappear with it. If you take out a paid month, calendar the cancellation date before you start, so a quiet month does not turn into a forgotten year of billing.
The same goes for Claude Pro. The free tier is the right choice while you are learning the method. Move to Pro when the free tier’s limits start interrupting a real research session, and drop back down when they stop.
